Who May Be a Candidate?
The FDA-approved Wegovy indication includes adults with obesity, or adults with overweight and at least one weight-related condition. Your provider considers BMI alongside blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose patterns, cardiovascular history, prior weight-loss efforts, medications, and other relevant factors.
Semaglutide is not appropriate for everyone. Wegovy carries a boxed warning about thyroid C-cell tumors observed in rodents and is contraindicated with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2. Important warnings include pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, low blood sugar with certain diabetes medicines, kidney injury from dehydration, serious allergic reactions, worsening diabetic retinopathy in some patients with diabetes, increased heart rate, and aspiration risk around anesthesia or deep sedation.
